Sophie the Giraffe was born May 25, 1961 in France. The creation of Monsieur Rampeau, who was an expert on molding rubber from the sap of the hevea tree, a substance completely safe for consumption. At the time of Sophie’s creation the only animal toys on the market for children were farm animals and pet figures. The exotic giraffe figure along with the small shape that made her easy to grasp made Sophie an instant success. Her fame spread by word of mouth and has now been a favorite toy in nursery for generations. Today, Sophie the Giraffe, which still appears as she did in 1961, continues to be produced in Rumilly in the Haute-Savoie Region of France by Vulli Toys. In a process that involves more than 14 manual operations, Sophie continues to be made from 100% natural rubber created from the sap of the hevea tree.
