Used by the Etruscans as early as 3000 B.C., granulation is a method of applying tiny beads of metal onto a smooth surface. Beads are made by sprinkling tiny metal chips in a charcoal kiln and heating them until they are transformed into perfect spheres. The beads are then attached using an organic blue made from tiny red berries and permanently heat fused into place.

Piercing and carving, often referred to simply as cut out, is an ancient method of working with silver and assorted metals that dates back to prehistoric times. Metal is domed over pitch or tar, after which a pattern is carefully drawn on the silver. Then, using a collection of handmade tools, the patterns are cut out through the silver, creating an elaborate contrast of positive and negative patterns.
