There are two types of whitening products that are sold over the counter:

Tooth whiteners use hydrogen peroxide.  The higher the level of peroxide, the greater the whitening.  The highest level allowable over the counter is 6% hydrogen peroxide.  Higher levels and extended contact times can cause damage to your teeth (be aware of at-home tray whiteners).

Tooth pastes use polishing or chemical agents to remove stains.  These products brush your teeth and freshen your breath while whitening your teeth.  Those that use abrasive agents can remove stains, but may also cause a gradual erosion and dulling of the tooth enamel.
